Courtfield Weekly Round-Up – Matchweek 2, 2025

With Courtfield A enjoying a scheduled week off, the spotlight turned to the Courtfield B team, who took centre stage away at Brampton. Buoyant after their opening win and with spirits high (partly thanks to the anticipation of a group holiday to Turkey 🍹🌞), the B team arrived determined — if slightly distracted by thoughts of sun loungers and duty-free.

Courtfield B Fall Just Short in Spirited Brampton Battle

Result: Brampton 7 – Courtfield B 3

With a few regulars on a beach rather than the bowling green, a reshuffled B team showed real grit against a strong Brampton side. Despite battling hard across all rinks, Courtfield B narrowly missed out on the win, slipping to a 7–3 defeat.

Rink-by-Rink Breakdown

  • Victory Rink:Ste Boyd (C), Tony Jackson & Julie Campbell put in a commanding display to take a 16–10 win — solid skips work and cool heads led this trio to their second straight success.

  • Tough Day at the Office:Gill Dawes, John McLaren & Tony Raffles had a rough ride, suffering a heavy 20–7 defeat as Brampton hit top form early and didn’t let up.

  • ⚖️ On a Knife’s Edge:Alan Dawes, Jean Boyd & Evelyn Coombes were level at 10–10 with two ends remaining. But as the green grew heavier and Brampton turned up the pressure with full-length jacks, the home side edged it 14–10.

  • 🤝 Last-End Drama:President Dave Graham, Mike Dewhurst & Chris Slack found themselves 11–10 down going into the final end. With classic Courtfield determination, they clawed back a shot to draw 11–11, securing a valuable point.

Helping Hand at Home

With the Courtfield green vacant this week, the club offered it up to Magpie and West End, whose own greens were unavailable. The match turned into a one-sided affair, with Magpie running away with an 8–2 win (80–44 on shots).

It could easily have been 10–0, but for a late twist: Les Metcalfe, lying five shots, unfortunately clipped in a West End wood on the final bowl — costing the rink and Magpie 2 extra points, as they lost by just two shots overall. A cruel moment in an otherwise dominant display!

What’s Next?

  • Courtfield A return to action next week, aiming to maintain their perfect start and keep pace at the top against Sub B (A) on Wednesday & Kirkbride (H) on Thursday

  • Courtfield B will be back from their holiday sun-kissed (and hopefully still in form), looking to bounce back if they can arrange their game against West End who have issues with their green.

More match reports, results, and tales from the green coming your way each week!
