COURTFIELD BOWLING
CLUB CARLISLE

CLUB HISTORY
Courtfield Bowling Club nestled in Carlisle has a storied history dating back to its founding when Aldreman George White opened the club on June 7th, 1900. Originally, the clubs’ facilities were modest, starting with a small tin shed that served as its bower. Despite its humble beginnings, the club quickly became a cornerstone of the local community, attracting lawn bowling enthusiasts from across the region. Over the years, the club has undergone several expansions, enhancing its facilities and providing one of the finest views for spectators in the county.

Early days
In its early days, Courtfield Bowling Club was one of the founding clubs of the Cumberland Bowling Association, established in 1919 along with Carlisle Subscription, Edenside, Holme Head and Stanwix, along with Penrith Friars, Silloth and Throstles Nest Wigton.

In 1958, Courtfield also contributed to the formation of the Cumberland Women’s Bowling Association, showing its significant role in promoting both men's and women's bowling in the region.
Race Week
The club was a pioneer in organising competitive events, introducing a full week’s tournament during Carlisle Race Week in 1964. This tournament became a major attraction featuring various formats such as Rinks, Triples, Pairs, and Singles.

The Race Week tournament became increasingly popular and many greens in the city were used for the early rounds as demand increased. Like many other tournaments, however, it has declined in recent years.
As our 125th anniversary is on the horizon we believe this is the perfect moment to reignite the enthusiasm for this historic tournament. In preparation for this landmark year, we are hopeful that the nostalgia of Race Week and the excitement of our anniversary will inspire a resurgence in participation. Whether you are a regular on the greens or someone looking for a new way to engage with the community, we invite you to be part of this exciting chapter in Courtfield Bowling Club's history.
Courtfield's finest
Margaret “Madge” Allan, a past lady president who earned herself national recognition and distinction on the bowling green and brought reflected glory to Courtfield Bowling club. Just one of Madges great achievements was winning commonwealth bronze at the 1986 games held in Edinburgh. Today the medal hangs proudly at the club after it was kindly donated by Madge’s family.

Today
Today, Courtfield Bowling Club remains a cherished institution in Carlisle, celebrated for its rich history, competitive spirit, and dedication to the sport of lawn bowling.

The club frequently holds social events, bringing together not only members but also friends, family, and supporters from the wider Carlisle area. This blend of sport and social connection ensures that the club remains a central part of life in Carlisle, where it continues to thrive, preserving the heritage of lawn bowling while embracing new generations of players.
