Courtfield Weekly Round-Up

Rain, missing players, borrowed bowlers, big wins, and even bigger team spirit — it’s been another classic week at Courtfield.
County Cup – Tuesday Night Drama
It was a real case of "so close" in the County Cup as Courtfield took on Aspatria A.
Away, Mr Chris, John, Paul and Carsy gave a brilliant account of themselves. They were holding four late in the game — only for a last bowl to wicked in off a stray and crash the party, sending the jack to the opposition and snatching victory. Lost by just 2 shots, but deserved credit for the effort.
At home, Ste G, Tayler, Ian P and Kev faced a tough rink and just couldn’t get going. A few loose ends early on proved costly as they slipped to a 6-shot defeat. Not the result we wanted, but far from disgraced.
Ladies League – Wednesday Afternoon Bounce Back
After a tough Top Club defeat earlier in the week, the ladies hit the road to Kirkbride — and turned things around in style.
Linda, Aileen W and Kerry were unstoppable, winning 11 of the 15 ends on their way to a brilliant 20–7 win.
Jean, Aileen M and Corrine came up against a solid trio and couldn’t quite get into it, losing 19–7.
That left it to Joanne A, Anne and Gill, who turned on the class with a superb 22–6 win to take the aggregate.
Linda and Anne led the way as stars of the day. Two league games left — and the momentum is definitely building.
Stan Bragg League – Three Rinks, Three Wins
Fresh from their previous win, the men carried that confidence into another dominant afternoon against rivals Subscription
Steve D, Ant and Dawesy found themselves 5–3 down early on, but a huge 6 on the sixth end swung the tide and they ran out 17–10 winners.
Ste G, Dai and Ian B barely put a foot wrong, controlling the game from the first end and even picking up a rare 8 to win 29–9.
Dave, Ste B and Jaffa had to come from behind, but once they clicked, there was no stopping them. Even after dropping a 6, they powered through to win 31–11.
A full house, all points secured, and the charge continues.
Carliol League – Wednesday Night Mix-Up
The A team arrived, warmed up, and waited… and waited. Unfortunately, Brampton didn’t get the message — a miscommunication meant the game was postponed. One for the reschedule list.
Wednesday Men’s County Singles – Brotherly Showdown
All eyes were on the clash between the Irwin brothers — Mark (last year’s winner) and Stuart. It didn’t disappoint… unless you’re Mark. Stuart took control early and never let go, storming to a 21–9 win in a statement performance to go through to the Quarters.
Quarter-Finals – Wednesday 9th July at Croft:
H. Creighton vs D. Forster
K. Harrison vs J. Fuge
M. Holding vs S. Irwin
R. Prince vs J. Park
Thursday – A Team Chaos at Dalston
Another game, another hiccup. This time it was Jaffa, who didn’t realise he was meant to be playing. With just two on one rink, Courtfield had it all to do.
John, Paul and Carsy fought back brilliantly from behind and bagged 2 points.
Tayler, Ian and Kev kept it simple, kept it strong, and cruised to another dominant win.
Ste G, Ste D and Lee raced into a 10–1 lead before switching off and letting Dalston claw back to 10–9. A quick sideline chat refocused them — they shut it down from there, winning 16–9.
Mr Chris and Lawrence, playing two against three (with a 25% handicap), were cool under pressure. They led all game and finished 12–9 on the green — which meant a 9–9 draw after the deduction. A heroic effort and a point well earned.
Thursday – B Team Weather the Storm
At home against Subscription B, the rain never let up — only 8 ends played on each rink, but Courtfield B made it count.
Aileen W, Dave and John made light work of Rink 3, winning 11–4.
Dave T, Alex and Gill dropped a big 4 on end six and couldn’t recover, losing 8–5.
Julie, Evelyn and Ste B lost the final two ends but had done enough early to win 7–4.
Jean, Tony J and Dawesy nearly let it slip but held on to win 8–5.
Result: Courtfield B win 8–2 — a great result in testing conditions.
Over 55s – Friday Afternoon Pressure Match
Against bottom side West End, the team did what was expected — an 8–2 win. But news filtered through that Wetheral beat Sub B 10–0 to jump to the top of the table. The silver lining? Courtfield have a game in hand. It’s all to play for.
Saturday – Friendly vs Maxwelltown
A late scramble to field a team — we even had to borrow one from the away side — but what a day it turned out to be.
Courtfield ran out winners
Spirits were high and everyone got stuck in
Special thanks to all who helped organise and to those who brought along some cracking food
These are the days that make the club what it is. Well done to all involved — both on and off the green.
