Courtfield Weekly Bowls Round-Up

Wins, Wicks, Power Plays & Plenty to Shout About!

It’s been a bumper week of bowls for Courtfield, with strong performances across the leagues, new formats taking shape, and silverware being chased around the county. Here’s your full round-up!

Ladies Lead the Charge at Wigton

The Courtfield Ladies were on the road to face a strong Wigton side—and came home with a brilliant 6-2 win! Jo, Anne, and Gill were dominant with a 27-18 victory, while Jean, Lesley, and Kerry took a tight 11-8 win. Linda, Aileen W, and Aileen M put up a great fight but were edged out 14-12. A real team performance that sets the tone for the season!

Carliol League – A & B Teams on Fire

The A Team made the trip to Brampton to take on The Magpie and secured a superb 8-2 victory, thanks to three high-scoring rinks. Lawrence, Blenk, and Jaffa narrowly lost 13-10—yes, we’ve heard the “too many wicks” excuse again, lads! 😄 The result keeps the A team firmly in the title hunt.

The B Team, back on home turf, hosted Wetheral. Jo, Anne, and Gill continued their fine form with an 18-8 win. Jean, Dusty, and John mounted a great comeback to win 12-8 after trailing late on. Chris, President Dave, and Mike were involved in a nail-biter, drawing 12-12 after being pipped on the 14th end. Julie, Tony R, and Ste B battled hard but went down 15-10 after a mid-game surge by Wetheral.

Elsewhere in the Carliol League...

  • Kirkbride beat West End 8-2 to climb into 3rd place.

  • Subscription A romped to a 10-0 win at Stanwix, maintaining their 11-point lead at the top.

  • Subscription B hosted Brampton and lost 8-2.

Friday Afternoon Over-55s Carliol League – Top Spot Secured!

Courtfield were in action again on Friday afternoon in the Over-55s Carliol League, playing The Magpie at home (the fixture was flipped due to the pub closure). And just like the night before, it was another commanding 8-2 win.

President Dave, Alan, and Ste B were the standout trio, powering to a 24-9 victory over Les Metcalfe’s rink. Dave M, Ian B, and Gordon fought hard but lost narrowly 14-12. The overall result sees Courtfield move to the top of the league table—a fantastic reward for some top-quality bowling!

Other results

  • Brampton beat West End 10-0.

  • Subscription B also secured an 8-2 win over Stanwix.

Friday Night Pairs League – Power Plays Begin!

Friday night saw the start of the new Pairs League, and the organisers have added a fun twist—Power Play ends! On one designated end per match, the points scored are doubled, creating exciting swings and fresh tactics.

With only four matches played so far, some results were a bit one-sided, but for newer players, it's a great chance to develop their game. It’s brilliant to see innovative formats being introduced, and we’re all for shaking things up.

Weekend Tournament Success

Courtfield bowlers were also out on the tournament circuit this weekend, with Steve Delucchi putting in a superb showing at Port Carlisle, winning his section. Great effort, Steve—congratulations!

County Fours Round-Up (Monday Night @ Caldbeck)

There was drama and quality bowling in Monday’s County Fours, with three of the four ties completed:

  • Wigton Park were dominant against Cleator Moor, who conceded early.

  • D. Forster’s Workington four came from behind to beat R. Irving 18-15, booking a semi-final spot as they aim to repeat their 2021 national success.

  • J. Baird’s Subscription team started well but were taken to an extra end by J. Walker’s Whitehaven side—Whitehaven held their nerve and progressed to face R. Baxter’s Wigton Park on May 27th.

Wrapping Up...

It’s been a week full of success, excitement, and some truly excellent bowling. Whether you’re battling for league points, trying out power plays, or winning trophies, the spirit and momentum at Courtfield is stronger than ever.

Bring on next week!
