Courtfield Weekly Bowls Round

Welcome back to your weekly bowls fix from Courtfield! A packed week of league matches, tournaments, and sunny greens brought drama, dominance, and a few nervy finishes. Here's everything you need to know…

🎯 Carliol League – Wednesday Night Drama

The A team were out to match—or better—the B team’s 10-0 demolition of Subscription B from the week before. With confidence high, Courtfield got off to a flyer:

  • Rink 5: Kev, Ian & Tayler delivered a strong win.

  • Rink 3: Lee, Steve G & Steve D mirrored the performance with another commanding result.

But not all went smoothly…

  • Rink 1: Jaffa, Dai & Mr Chris (fresh from Norway) struggled to contain Colin Reed and suffered a heavy loss.

With aggregate points already secured, Rink 2 became the decider for the final two points. It was a nail-biter as John, Paul, and Blenk (skipping for the first time) battled hard. A last-end scare nearly cost them, but they held on to win 12-11, sealing an 8-2 overall victory.

🔁 Thursday Night – More of the Same

Mr Chris dropped to the bench, making way for Big Lol Coulthard. Otherwise, it was business as usual for the other three rinks. Courtfield showed their class once again:

Result: 60-36 win and a full 10 points.

Credit to Kirkbride who bowled well across the green, but Courtfield were just too consistent.

👴 Carliol Over 55s – Still in the Hunt

Courtfield’s Over 55s hosted Brampton in their second league game and bagged a 7-3 win to stay firmly in the title chase.

  • Dusty, Mike & John delivered a confident win over Charles Robinson.

  • President Trump, Dai and Steve B also secured victory with a strong performance.

  • Dave Myers, Blenk & Gordon drew 12-12—just one loose bowl on the last end denied them the win.

  • Chris, Alan D & Jaffa lost out to a solid display from Billy Reid.

🔥 Men’s County Fours – Kirkbride Heatwave

Courtfield's sole entry into the Men’s County Fours saw Kevin, Lee, Tayler & Mr Chris face Wigton Park at Kirkbride under Saturday’s scorching sunshine.

They looked sharp early on, building a 10-6 lead after 11 ends, but couldn't maintain the momentum—Wigton Park surged back, and Courtfield didn’t score again.

Other results:

  • Subscription eased through on Rink 1

  • Whitehaven beat Maryport 18-9

  • Cleator Moor overpowered Shap 25-8

🗓 Quarter-finals at Caldbeck – May 19th

🏆 Subscription Tournament – Sunshine & Success

A beautifully run event in perfect bowling weather saw several Courtfield triples take part in the Subscription Tournament. The green played superbly, allowing for some top-drawer bowling.

👏 Hats off to Margaret, Corrine & Kerry, who won their section and progressed to the knockouts—an excellent showing!

🚐 Monday Night – Carliol League: Courtfield B Travel to Stanwix

It was a tough away fixture for Courtfield B at Stanwix, but there were positives to take:

  • Jean, Mike & John bagged a 17-12 win, securing two valuable points.

  • Julie, Tony & Steve B came agonisingly close—needing a perfect final bowl for the win, Steve just missed the jack, handing the points to Stanwix.

🔚 Final result: 8-2 to Stanwix

The B team will be hoping to bounce back when they host Wetheral on Thursday. Meanwhile, the A team travel to Brampton to face "The Magpie."

🆕 Stan Bragg League – Season Opener

Courtfield opened their Stan Bragg League campaign with an away trip to Wetheral. On a green that proved unpredictable, results were mixed:

  • President Dave, Steve B & Jaffa fought hard and won by 3 shots.

  • The other two triples lost by 3 shots each, despite solid efforts.

📊 Final score: 6-2 to Wetheral (Shots: 36-39)

A narrow loss, but encouraging signs for the rest of the season.

That’s your round-up for this week! Plenty of action across all formats, and more to come with Thursday’s fixtures and the upcoming County Fours quarter-finals. As always—good bowling, and we’ll see you on the green!
