Courtfield Week of Triumphs – Ladies Make History, A Team Dig Deep, and County Glory Beckons

As July winds down, the greens get a little quieter, but there was no shortage of action for Courtfield this week — from historic moments to County heroics.

Wednesday: A Historic Night at Home

Courtfield hosted the HVPs in what turned into a landmark evening — for the first time, ladies were involved in the match, bringing fresh energy to the green. Five rinks of triples played in the right spirit: plenty of laughs, cracking play, and the score barely mattered — though for the record, Courtfield won all five rinks. The night was capped with a superb two-course meal served up by the ladies — great company, great bowls, and great food. A perfect evening.

Thursday – Carliol League

A Team – Away at Kirkbride

With Kev and Tayler still neck-deep in all-inclusive luxury in Turkey, the A team headed to Kirkbride knowing it would be tough.

  • Rink 5 (Andy, Ian P, Paul) – An end-to-end battle with Travis Pape’s triple saw the scores tied at 11-11 before Courtfield hit their stride, scoring three 3s in four ends and taking it 21-15.

  • Rink 3 (Ste G, Dai, Lee) – Trailing 13-6 after 10 ends, they pulled out a gritty comeback, tying it at 13-13 before a stolen single by Kirkbride made it 14-13. But Ste G led the charge on the final end, Courtfield scoring a match-winning 4 to take the rink 17-14.

  • Rink 2 (Tony A, John B, Carsy) – Flew out the traps 8-2 before Kirkbride clawed it back. A bad four on the 13th end tied things up, and a cracking Kirkbride final bowl sealed a narrow 15-14 win for the home team.

  • Rink 1 (Mr Chris, Lawrence, Jaffa) – After a disastrous start (15-6 down after 10), the lads hit back with a 7-shot run and were holding 4 before Jade ditched the jack. Despite losing 17-13, the priority became the aggregate, and Jaffa held back on his final wood to protect the overall win.

Result: Courtfield win 6-4 on points (Aggregate 65-61) – The unbeaten run survives another week!

B Team – vs West End

Looking to bounce back after last week’s slip, the B team hosted bottom-of-the-table West End and meant business.

  • Rink 1 (Anne, Tony J, Gill) – Recovered from a 6-0 deficit with ruthless scoring including three 5s to romp home 25-10.

  • Rink 3 (Jo, Jean, Dawesy) – Dominated from the off and finished with a handsome 28-9 win.

  • Rink 5 (Jo A, Dave, Ste) – Battled hard against a stubborn West End triple. A five on end 9 levelled it, but the game remained tight and was edged out 13-12 by the visitors.

  • Rink 6 (Linda, Mike, John) – Lost just four ends and even bagged a six on the way to a massive 27-5 win.

Result: Courtfield win 8-2 (Aggregate 92-33) – Back in business.

Friday – Watching from the Sidelines

With Courtfield not in action, Wetheral took their chance, beating Stanwix 8-2 and extending their lead to 11 points. But with two games in hand, the title race is still in Courtfield’s hands.

Weekend – County Finals Weekend

Junior Singles – Tayler v David Wilson (Aspatria)

Tayler opened finals weekend with a strong showing in the Junior Singles, but fell short 21-13 against a solid opponent. Still just getting started, with time on his side, he’s one to watch.

Junior Pairs – Tayler & J Scott v Jack Wilson & Harry Creighton

After a good start and a 9-5 lead, the Aspatria pairing clawed it back and pulled away to win 17-11. Another strong effort — the future remains bright for Tayler.

The Fab Four in the County Fours Final

John Brown (aka "I Brown"), Mr Chris, Paul Campbell, and Carsy took on Whitehaven’s Preston, Clarke, Walker, and Blenkinsop.

  • Trailing 10-7, then 15-7, things looked bleak. But Carsy’s rallying cry to “just win the next end” sparked a comeback.

  • Paul “mystery bowls” Campbell dragged the jack back to land a 5, then they powered into the lead with a 4.

  • A 2 from Whitehaven made it 17-17 all with one end to play.

  • Courtfield’s front end set it up, and with the head smashed by a running wood, it looked tense — but a measurement showed Mr Chris had it by just 2mm.

  • Carsy then played a textbook blocker, and Whitehaven couldn’t better it.

🎉 Courtfield win and now head to Leamington to face Durham in their national opener. Everyone at the club is buzzing. Go get it, lads!

Monday – Stan Bragg League

Courtfield need to win all remaining games to stay in the hunt — and did just that vs Port Carlisle.

  • Rink 2 (Dave, Ste, Jaffa) – Opened with a 7 and never looked back, winning 24-9.

  • Rink 1 (Ant, Dawesy, Ian B) – Up 18-7 before a late wobble, but held on 20-15.

  • Rink 3 (Ste G, Dai, George G) – Nip and tuck until a 3 on the 14th gave them the edge, winning 11-7.

Result: Courtfield win 8-0 – Two games left and still all to play for!
